Educational Profile

The knowledge economy of Armenia is strong. You can guess about the knowledge capital of Armenia from the fact that there was 100 percent literacy in 1960. Since Armenia carries 1600 years of long history, its education has also gone for changes with the change of power, but the level of education was never low. During the Soviet rule Russian was language of instruction in many schools. As country gained independence in 1991 the schools teaching courses in Russian either closed or switched over to Armenian language. Though Russian is still taught as second language.

According to one estimate, in 1990 –91, there were 608 800 students enrolled in 1 307 primary and secondary schools, 45900 students were enrolled in specialized secondary schools, and 68 400 students were enrolled in post secondary institutions. In 1992, Armenia’s Yerevan State University had 1300 teachers and 10000 in 18 departments including social sciences and law. Eight other institutions of higher learning located in Yerevan were involved in teaching agriculture, fine arts and theater, economics, music, applied science and technology, medicine, pedagogy and foreign languages, and veterinary medicine. These figures loudly speak what level of education in Armenia despite inappropriate economic growth.
